Ann Singleton (Senior Research Fellow, University of Bristol/Senior Adviser, IOM GMDAC) and Denis Kierans (Data and Research Officer, IOM GMDAC) co-facilitated a regional training of trainers on migration data collection and management in Abuja, Nigeria from 22-24 May. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with support from the UN Migration Agency (IOM) through the EU-funded support to Free Movement of Persons and Migration in West Africa (FMM West Africa) project organized this workshop.

IOM GMDAC, in collaboration with FMM, has developed regional guidelines for ECOWAS (2016), which include an action plan for improved migration data practices. The training brought together 30 experts from national statistics offices and officers in charge of administrative data collection. They worked on the regional guidelines and training tools to reinforce their knowledge and capacity in preparation to cascade the training at a national level for the benefit of a wider audience.

The objectives from this training were to strengthen the leading role of ECOWAS on migration data capacity building and to make recommendations for the implementation of the guidelines at a national level.
