Kenza Aggad, Data and Policy Analyst, and Elisa Mosler Vidal, Research and Data Officer at IOM’s GMDAC, attended a workshop on migration data mapping in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, from 23–25 July 2019, to support the Central Statistical Agency’s (CSA) migration statistics production.

In line with the Regional Mixed Migration Programme (RMMP) and at the request of the CSA of Ethiopia, the aim of this workshop was to lay the foundation towards building CSA’s migration data capacity to better inform evidence-based programming and policy making. The key objectives of the workshop were to create a common understanding of the key elements of migration data for national and international statistical reporting, to gain understanding of existing migration data governance models and to define a plan of action for increased cooperation regarding migration data amongst key actors and stakeholders in Ethiopia.

The workshop was attended by a broad range of stakeholders from Ethiopia, including: the Central Statistics Agency (CSA), the Immigration, Nationality and Vital Events Agency (INVEA), the Agency for Refugees and Returnees Affairs (ARRA), the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MOLSA), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Federal Attorney General, university professors, the Federal Urban Job Creation and Food Security Agency, Nigeria’s National Population Commission, UNICEF, and IOM.

Ms. Aggad and Ms. Mosler Vidal presented on migration data and its relevance in global and regional processes, as well as on key concepts, definitions, international recommendations and key migration data sources at the international, regional and local level. They also discussed GMDAC’s migration data capacity building activities with case studies from across the African continent.

Together with the CSA and the other key actors, there were several outputs of the workshop, including an updated macro data map visualizing the various structures working on migration data in Ethiopia as well as the links among them. The participants also outlined a harmonized migration data management strategy and a preliminary action plan for collaboration between the Central Statistical Agency and other key actors related to migration data in Ethiopia.
