Expert group meeting for data collection on irregular migration, smuggling and trafficking of persons and international protection

Frank Laczko (Director, IOM’s GMDAC) participated in an experts’ meeting on migration data organized by the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa from 27 – 29 August 2018.

The expert group meeting discussed common challenges and possible methodologies for data collection on irregular migration in Africa.

Mr Laczko gave an overview of global processes on migration governance, and the various mentions in these to improve migration data. He presented the regional context of migration data in Africa, highlighting key challenges. Some of these included: a lack of resources to collect, disseminate and analyze migration data; poor availability of administrative data sources; minimal data sharing and weak coordination between data users.

IOM’s GMDAC Director also attended the Experts Group Meeting (EGM) of the second edition of the Labour Migration Statistics Report, held between 27-31 August 2018 in the Ethiopian capital.
