“Migration in times of climate change and the polity options for action” was the topic of an expert discussion which took place on 27 March 2019 at Adelphi consulting, in Berlin, Germany.

The discussion focused on environmental and climate change induced migration, as well as on possible measures in the area of climate change adaptation.

The workshop gathered 25 experts working on climate and environmental migration, environmental protection, climate adaptation, disaster prevention, development cooperation and humanitarian aid.

Susanne Melde, Senior Analyst at IOM’s GMDAC, presented the analysis based on two background papers on the state-of-the-art of knowledge on the topic, which has substantially grown and is providing sound research and an evidence base for policy recommendations and guidelines with regards to climate change, environment and migration.

The discussion showed that the consequences of a warming of one degree need to be acknowledged more explicitly, as they are already occurring. Participants also agreed that the topic needs to be integrated more into planning processes, including in development projects.

An international conference to present these and other findings is planned to take place on 28 June in Bonn, Germany.
