Leave no migrant behind: Data Disaggregation & the Sustainable Development

Leave no migrant behind: Data Disaggregation & the Sustainable Development

Wednesday 14 April 2021, 13:30 – 15:00 CET

To ensure the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to “leave no one behind” is met, migrants must be considered across efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data disaggregation is crucial to this. SDG target 17.18 calls for data to be disaggregated by migratory status among other variables, reflecting a growing understanding that this is an important tool to enable inclusiveness. However, to date migrants are largely invisible in official global-level SDG data meaning that as we approach 2030, we still do not know what the effects of the SDGs are on migrants, whether they are being left behind, and to what extent. Further, as migrants are also key actors of sustainable development, low disaggregation levels make it difficult to understand migrants' contributions to SDG progress.

The webinar will launch IOM's GMDAC new capacity building tool on data disaggregation, "Leave no Migrant Behind", and with a diverse set of speakers will examine different theoretical and practical elements related to data disaggregation. For example, how can we use data to help leave no one behind, what are practical opportunities and challenges related to this at the country level and how has the pandemic affected this topic? This will also discuss what can be done concretely to make migrants and other population sub-groups more visible in data moving forward.
