Launch of the Global Migration Data Portal in Spanish

IOM’s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) will launch the Spanish-language version of the Global Migration Data Portal in Guatemala City, Guatemala on August 20, 2019. The Spanish-language launch aims to contribute to improving knowledge management on migration data in the 20 countries where Spanish is an official language and increase countries’ data capacity for measuring progress toward migration-related targets in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Policy makers, national statistics officers, journalists and the general public interested in the field of migration data and information will be able to access Spanish content across the Portal’s main sections:

  • An interactive world map with data from over 20 international data providers;
  • Thematic pages covering topics such as remittances, human trafficking, international migration stocks and flows;
  • Overviews of migration data, information and migration governance per country;
  • Tools on migration data collection and analysis;
  • Migration topics related to the SDGs and the GCM; and
  • Blogs and videos featuring migration experts.

The Global Migration Data Portal (the Portal), which was launched in December 2017,  is a flagship project of IOM’s GMDAC and serves as an important knowledge platform for approximately 40,000 users per month, including users from international organizations, governments, NGOs, journalists, and the public across all UN Member States. The multi-donor project has received global media coverage, is referenced in over 200 online sites, and has been mentioned in the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), paragraph 17(e), as a key migration data depository.

The Portal is managed and developed by GMDAC, with the guidance of its Advisory Board, and was supported in its conception by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The Portal is supported financially by the Government of Germany and Switzerland, among others.
