Description:

Biometric collection and registration has taken an increasingly important role in the migration and border management of the European Union. The three main databases1 managed by the European Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems (eu-LISA) – namely the European Asylum Dactyloscopy (Eurodac), the Schengen Information System (SIS II) and the Visa Information System (VIS) – allow national authorities to exchange, share and collaborate on biometric and other data under the supervision of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS)2 and the Member States’ national data protection authorities. The compliant exchange of data stored on these systems has become an integral part of migration, border management and law enforcement processes in the European Union.
