Missing Migrants Project records more than 6,000 migrant deaths for third consecutive year
On 23 February IOM’s Missing Migrants Project (MMP) released its summary figures for 2017, which include more than 1,700 deaths and disappearances on the African continent, 3,139 in the Mediterranean Sea and 415 migrant deaths on the US-Mexico border. Nevertheless, MMP’s records likely represent a fraction of the true scale of people dying while migrating for a better life. IOM’s Director General, William Lacy Swing, stressess that “not all deaths and disappearances during migration are reported – in many remote regions of the world, bodies may never be found, and many migrants may never be identified.”
