Carla Rojas Paz (Migration Data Editor, IOM’s GMDAC) attended a seminar on migration data in Tunis on 23 - 24 July 2018. Ms. Rojas presented on the Global Migration Data Portal and how it can be used to understand and improve migration data for policy.
The seminar, organized by IOM Tunisia and the Tunisian National Observatory for Migration, aimed at sensitizing different stakeholders about the importance of collecting reliable migration data, improving dialogue on existing data collection systems or methods, and exchanging ideas on improving national migration data.
About 60 migration stakeholders attended, including Tunisian government officials, civil society members, and inter-governmental and international organizations. Coordination, sharing and harmonization of migration data was perceived by most participants as one of the biggest challenges facing Tunisia. The issue of data protection and data protection laws was also discussed as a key topic.
