IOM´s Data Analysis Centre, OECD´s Migration Division, UNDESA´s Population Division and Statistics Division, the Overseas Development Institute and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation jointly organized a side event on Migration and the Agenda 2030 for Development during the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) in Berlin on June 29.

The side event, titled “Migration and the Agenda 2030 for Development: the role of cross-sectoral thinking, data and evidence for effective implementation,” highlighted the relation between development issues and migration, and stressed the urgent need to improve quality of data in order to monitor implementation of the SDGs. IOM´s GMDAC Director Frank Laczko presented the upcoming Global Migration Data Portal and the International Forum on Migration Statistics (co-organized by OECD, IOM and UNDESA) as part of the new initiatives which will improve the collection, analysis and sharing of data.

The tenth Global Forum on Migration and Development took place in Berlin from June 27-28 under the overarching theme “Towards a Global Social Contract on Migration and Development.” Germany and Morocco are co-chairing the Forum from 2017-2018. During this two-year period, the focus will be on the contribution of the GFMD to the United Nations’ Global Compact on Migration.
