Susanne Melde participated in the high-level conference titled “Power from Statistics” in Brussels on 18-19 October.

Speaking at the panel discussion on migration trends, Ms Melde presented the main goals, structure and development of the forthcoming Global Migration Data Portal. Ms Melde also discussed the workshop on Big Data which will be held on 30 November 2017 in Ispra, Italy, and is co-organized by European Commission´s Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD) and GMDAC. Lastly, she explained MigApp, IOM’s global mobile app project. By logging on to this application though mobile phones, migrants can access readily available information and services relevant to their specific migration process.

The conference participants agreed that more context, including visualizations, is needed on data, and that big data and non-traditional data sources can complement traditional data sources.

“Power from Statistics” brought together representatives of different backgrounds for a critical discussion on the future needs for evidence to inform policy, and how these information needs could be met by the European official statistics community of tomorrow.
