Jasper Tjaden (Data and Survey Officer, IOM GMDAC) facilitated a training on the ECOWAS guidelines in Banjul, the Gambia on August 4. The organizers included IOM Gambia, IOM Nigeria, IOM Dakar and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), while it was implemented within the framework of the Free Movement of Persons and Migration in West Africa (FMM West Africa) project.

The workshop titled ‘Developing procedures for national coordination of migration data’ brought together 40 delegates and experts from Gambia’s Bureau of Statistics, National Population Commission Secretariat, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Justice, Foreign Affairs, Local Government, Health, Youth, Gambia Refugee Commission and the National Youth Council.

The participants identified several obstacles to achieving progress on data sharing including lack or misuse of resources, chain of command among stakeholders and need for staff training. The workshop completed with a list of recommendation for better sharing and coordination as well as next steps to follow up.
